Spanish Early Modern and Golden Age Literature

Course Description
This course introduces students to the reflection and discussion of the most representative literary trends of the Spanish Golden Age. It consider the historical context and the social/ideological expectations of early modern and Baroque poetry in Spain. Under the guidance of the instructor, students read, analyze and comment selected sixteenth and seventeenth-century texts and review the proposals by contemporary critical readings of the Golden Age literary and artistic production.

Learning Goals
At the end of this class the students should be able to:
1. General knowledge of 16th and 17th-century Spain and its literary production
2. Engage critically with literary texts within a specific historical context and genre (poetry, comedia)
3. Understanding the present in relation to the legacy of Spain’s Golden Age
4. The ability to incorporate and explain learned material in relation to a specific topic
5. Produce research papers of a publishable quality
